French Expressions of Quantity Weight and Volume

French Expressions of Quantity Weight and Volume

French expressions of quantity are followed by DE (or D’ when the word begins with a vowel), even when the noun that follows is plural.  Here is a lesson on the different ways to use DE, and you can download a free PDF of this lesson guide in my private French Grammar Library.

Use the list below to express quantities such as weight and volume.  You’ll find that many of these are used with food and drinks.  Get your list of adverbial expressions of quantity here.

👉 Je vais te servir une tasse de café.

👉 I am going to serve you a cup of coffee.

EXCEPTION:  The definite articles LE – LA – LES may be used with these expressions to indicate the quantity of a specific item.  Remember that DE + LE = DU, and DES + LES = DES.

👉 Je vais te servir une tasse du café que j’ai préparé.

👉 I am going to serve you a cup of the coffee that I prepared.

THE PRONOUN “EN”: Since all of these expressions indicate quantity, and they are followed by de, you can simply replace DE + NOUN with the pronoun EN.

👉 Je vais servir une assiette de fromage. / I am going to serve a plate of cheese.

👉 Je vais en servir (une). / I am going to serve one (of them).
