Irregular French Verb Mettre

The irregular French verb METTRE is an important one to learn. Many times this verb is idiomatic in nature which means you wouldn’t necessarily think of using it if you come from an English speaking background. 

In this lesson we will look at six different ways to use the verb METTRE, and I’ll show you all of the ways to conjugate it in different tense charts.

METTRE – TO PUTJe mets mon sac sur la table.
I put my bag on the table.
I am putting my bag on the table.
METTRE – TO PUT ONTu mets ton tee-shirt bleu.
You put on your blue t-shirt.
You are putting on your blue t-shirt.
METTRE – TO SPEND TIME DOING SOMETHINGIl met quinze minutes pour aller à l’école.
He spends fifteen minutes going to school.
METTRE – TO SET THE TABLENous mettons la table.
We set the table.
We are setting the table. 
METTRE – TO TURN SOMETHING ONVous mettez la radio.
You turn on the radio.
You are turning on the radio.
SE METTRE À – TO START DOING SOMETHINGIls se mettent à faire leurs devoirs.

They are starting to do their homework.
They’re starting their homework.

Other ways to use the French verb METTRE

METTRE – TO HANG; TO PUT UPJe mets les tableaux au mur.
I’m hanging the paintings on the wall.
METTRE – TO GIVE; TO AWARDD’habitude, ce professeur met de bonnes notes.
Usually, this teacher gives (awards) good grades.
SE METTRE – TO APPLY; TO PUT ONElles se mettent de la crème solaire.
They are putting on sunscreen.
SE METTRE – TO WEAR; TO DRESSIls se mettent souvent en jean.
They often wear jeans.
SE METTRE – TO SIT; TO STANDNous nous mettons toujours au premier rang.
We always sit at the front.
METTRE À JOUR – TO UPDATEJe mettrai le site à jour demain.
I will update the site tomorrow.
