EXAMPLES:
TU ÉTUDIES LE FRANÇAIS.
Tu étudies le français? Tu parles français?
PARLER FRANÇAIS (TU)
Tu parles français?
Forming questions in French with EST-CE QUE
C’EST = IT IS
EST-CE = IS IT
EST-CE QUE = IS IT THAT
EST-CE QUE – Place it at the beginning of the sentence.
EST-CE QUE – Always followed by a subject or subject pronoun.
Tu parles français?
Est-ce que tu parles français?
TYPES OF QUESTIONS:
INTONATION – Tu parles français?
EST-CE QUE – Est-ce que tu parles français?
INVERSION – Parles-tu français?
NEGATION – Ne parles-tu pas français?
Forming Questions in French Using INVERSION
To form a question using inversion, all you have to do is invert the subject and verb. Nothing can separate the verb and subject once they’ve been inverted and connected with a hyphen.
NOUN SUBJECT – Jennifer (parler français)
Jennifer parle-t-elle français?
Use -T- when a verb ends in a vowel in the 3rd person singular (IL – ELLE – ON). The reason why is because of pronunciation. The -t- makes it sound pretty.
Jean (manger à la cantine)
Jean mange-t-il à la cantine?
