French Numbers 1 – 100

Numbers are everywhere — from telling the time and shopping at a market to giving your phone number or talking about dates. Learning French numbers might seem tricky at first, but once you get the patterns down, counting from 1 to 100 becomes easy and even fun!

In this lesson, you’ll learn how to confidently say, read, and use all the numbers from 1 to 100, plus some tips to help you remember them quickly.

Numbers 1–10

1 – un (uh[n])

2 – deux (duh)

3 – trois (twah)

4 – quatre (kah-truh)

5 – cinq (sank)

6 – six (seess)

7 – sept (set)

8 – huit (wheat)

9 – neuf (nuhf)

10 – dix (deess)


Numbers 11–16

11 – onze

12 – douze

13 – treize

14 – quatorze

15 – quinze

16 – seize


Numbers 17–19

17 – dix-sept (10 + 7)

18 – dix-huit (10 + 8)

19 – dix-neuf (10 + 9)


Tens: 20 to 60

20 – vingt

30 – trente

40 – quarante

50 – cinquante

60 – soixante


Numbers between these are built with hyphens. 

22 = vingt-deux

35 = trente-cinq

Only 21, 31, 41, 51, and 61 use “et un” (e.g., vingt et un, trente et un)


Tricky part: Numbers 70–100

70 = soixante-dix (60 + 10)

71 = soixante et onze (60 + 11)

72 = soixante-douze

79 = soixante-dix-neuf

80 = quatre-vingts (4 x 20)

81 = quatre-vingt-un (no “et”)

82 = quatre-vingt-deux

89 = quatre-vingt-neuf

90 = quatre-vingt-dix

91 = quatre-vingt-onze

99 = quatre-vingt-dix-neuf

100 = cent


Pronunciation Practice

Practice tricky numbers like:

huit (sounds like wheat)

neuf (rhymes with “nuhf”)

vingt (the ‘t’ is silent unless followed by another number)

quatre-vingts: drop the final “s” when followed by another number (e.g. quatre-vingt-un)
